Research Centers, Institutes, Programs

Academic medical centers provide a top-level directory of their Centers and Institutes. Units listed therein are often referred to as organized research units or interdisciplinary centers. Lines of organization, authority and responsibility vary alternatively among the academic medical center’s university, medical school, or health science center (i.e., hospital/medical center.)

Arbitrarily, schools might or might not include clinical centers (i.e., primarily, patient care units) in these directories. See examples below:

Example 1: Centers & Institutes at University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine.
In this directory, the SOM differentiates its units only as being either Centers or Institutes.

Example 2: Centers & Institutes at University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine.
In this directory, the SOM differentiates its units as being either
Free-standing, Interdisciplinary Centers and Institutes, or else as Departmental Centers.

Example 3: Centers and Institutes at University California, Irvine.
In this directory, the SOM designates its units as being either: (1) special research programs; (2) organized research units; (3) campus centers; (4) other centers and institutes; or (5) school centers.

Regardless of what type/categorization of center or institute is listed in a school directory, we include it in our directory. Currently, we do not aggregate clinical centers or institutes; such units will display in search output only if they happen to appear in the top-level school directory, or else if a department itself denotes a center/institute/clinic as a specific focal sub-unit. Clinical units (i.e., departmental centers) will be formally introduced in a forthcoming phase of directory development.
